EVIE HELENA MADDISON
ABOUT
I am a UK-based mixed media artist whose work explores the complexities of the human condition. My ongoing fascination with the nature of existence and the sensory experiences that shape our daily lives has led me to examine my own life on an almost molecular level. Drawing inspiration from philosophies such as Nihilism and Existentialism, I strive to create a visual language that reflects my understanding of my place in the world and, by extension, the constantly evolving world around me.
A particular area of interest in my practice is the routine and the mundane. For my BA (Hons) Degree show exhibition at Loughborough University, titled Exhibit B, I created an immersive installation that compiled months of data, tracking my life hour by hour over the span of a year. This piece integrated photography, videography, sound works, and data represented through numbers, words, and graphs. My intention was to invite the viewer into my personal experience, while confronting them with a stark, almost eerie reminder of the relentless passage of time and, ultimately, our inevitable mortality. Exhibit B serves as an introduction to a long-term project dedicated to further exploring the nuances of existence and the inexorable flow of time.
Recently, I have become increasingly captivated by the materiality of oil paint, particularly its capacity to reimagine landscapes in ways that reshape how the subject matter is perceived. Having long been drawn to photography and its power to define and influence the meaning of a scene, I have shifted my focus to consider how the same image can be reinterpreted through the medium of paint. When selecting imagery to work from, I am particularly drawn to liminal spaces and stark contrasts, often involving dramatic silhouettes. These images evoke feelings of discomfort, vulnerability, or fear—emotions that I seek to explore and communicate through my work.
Inspired by my deep love for live music, I've channeled my passion for various bands into vibrant paintings that capture the electrifying atmosphere of concert venues. Often commissioned by fellow music enthusiasts, these works aim to immortalise the euphoria of a live performance through the dynamic interplay of colour and brushstroke.
